Student Illness or Injury at School
The Solon Community School District has procedures in place for sending and keeping children home from school when they are ill. We follow these procedures to make sure that children are given an adequate amount of time and rest to get well before returning to school, and to prevent the spread of germs to other children and school staff.
This information is provided by the Iowa Department of Public Health regarding common childhood illnesses, when the child should be excluded from school, and when they may return. See the IDPH Child Illnesses and Exclusion MEMO for more specific information.
Regarding Illnesses
Keep your child home from school when he/she has a fever of 100.4 (F) or greater and for 24 hours after the fever has gone away, without taking Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin).
Your child should stay home from school when he/she has diarrhea and/or vomiting and for 24 hours after these symptoms have occurred.
If your child is diagnosed with a bacterial infection that requires antibiotics, he/she will need to be on the antibiotics for a full 24 hours before returning to school.
If your child tests positive for Covid, he/she may return to school when symptoms are improving and he/she has been fever free for 24 hours without medication.
When your child returns to school after an illness he/she should be able to participate in the total school program including outdoor recess and physical education. Your child will be excused from outside recess and physical education after an illness only by a written recommendation from your family doctor or primary health care provider.
Please be sure the school has a telephone number where you can be reached in case your child becomes ill at school. Call the school if your child will not be attending school because of illness.
Regarding Injuries
Your student will receive medical attention at school and/or be taken to an appropriate medical facility depending on the degree of injury.
It shall be the responsibility of the parent to provide the school district with updated medical information following any injuries.
Medications at School
If your child needs to receive medication at school (over-the-counter or prescription), the medication should be provided to the office in the original bottle with the medication administration form completed. All medication should be kept in the nurse’s office and students should not be self-administering medication throughout the day.
